Been making progress and taking pictures but not updating much because it's all been in limbo. It's taken a ton of hours, maybe 30-40 to get the bulkhead ready for coating
hardest part was trying to figure out what holes go where and how big etc
https://www.gunsandrovers.com/forum/...le-fixing-help
started with replacing the driver footwell. I took my time and carefully cut everything out that was going away without disturbing whats staying
blasted this area after
whole foot panel removed
Then I started to patch holes... so many holes
I thought I made major progress - I was only about 1/3 done
cut out a spot for the dip switch
I had a local sheetmetal guy make me a replacement top piece - mine was all rotten

then came passenger footwell... I should have just bought a replacement panel. I did way more patches here (will post pics later)
holes behind instrument cluster
I'll post pictures of what it looks like now, blasted and ready for powder coat primer. Hopefully tomorrow. I got all the holes patched, nuts replaced... OMG so many holes were patched then sanded then blasted to see if done well....
transmission I got in Idaho was super clean inside. hardest part was cleaning the case. I have everything ready to be put back together now, I'm just waiting on parts to arrive from UK. I got a bunch during the STRONG dollar days. USA #1!!
I'll be posting about that soon
cleaned - ignore the input shaft, it's from a different transmission

Fortunately it does look relatively solid. Lot of work ahead of you but should be a fun project.
speaking of sketchy, these are the axles that came with the truck. top one is home made from various parts, did not have clips holding in the U-joint
bottom one is original but not oriented correctly. Picture was after I blasted them
I worked on one of the good driveshafts today. Blasted, coated and installed new Ujoints. I need to order a slip yokle gasket(s)
which driveshaft goes to the front and which to the rear... short and long? Also which one gets the boot?
I also started to put some trans parts back together. Main bearing just slid in after a few minutes in the work oven

^thank you.
After lots of cleaning and searching for the correct hardware with a tape measure, the transmission/transfer case is just about done
my friend with a late model SIIa thought I did such a nice job that he brought me over his to put back together! My work bench was ALMOST cleared by the time he showed up
I got a few questions
what do you guys use to keep the rubber bellhousing plug, in place of the factory's black glue stuff?
what oil should I be using ?
I'm waiting for the transfer case idler gear bushings and Im curious on the general consensus around here about the romerdrive aluminum cover? worth to get now, down the line or don't bother
what color should a S2 engine be? this one seems to be some sort of grey

I got a rocky mountain transfer case cover from Forester (thank you) and did some work on the steering wheel. There's still a long way to go on it
decided to tackle cleaning/painting/refreshing the engine. If it's as good as the transmission I shouldn't have much to do on it.
factory rust inhibitor is on there thick! I think the front crank seal is original
so far only lots of sludge inside but Im yet to pull the pan off
I thought that S2 engines were grey but this one is some light color beige!
turns out the engine that came with the truck is a later 2.25 with 2a stuff on it ... like thermostat housing and goose neck manifold
I need to figure out what it is exactly but its got a 9 bolt water pump and later head
ohh yeah there was no thermostat in it... who needs that anyway

pulled the oil pan off today and started the cleaning process, I like to use just the cheap oven cleaner from home depot. spray it on and watch it all melt away
little bit of sludge but not terrible, I need to check the bearings but so far it seems like it's all good
of course this happened
found some cool factory markings (engine is upside down)
