Being a newer member I know there is a lot of great stuff posted here that I have not seen. This may have been mentioned prior.

Stashed away in a trailer I found an old bottle of Rust Kutter a month or more ago.


I looked it up and seems to get good reviews. I tested a spot on the old frame to see the results.


The results looked promising. This is subject to rain as it sits outside.

Sunday before I gave up working I decided to try a coat on the surface area rust on the bulkhead. Used a small wire brush then used a small brush to apply, as the sprayer no longer works. Here is the result so far.



The white is where surface rust was. Need to do one or two more applications, but it looks promising to me.

Does anyone have galvanized panels between the outriggers and the fuel tank?

I remember installing these 25 years ago but don't recall if they were existing or something I made.

I used up the last of my cold galv spray, can't seem to find more, and just primed the other.

Probably the same stuff as Ospho. Mostly phosphoric acid.

We took a couple weeks vacation, but before I left, I dropped the muffler/ mid pipe off at a local welder who specializes in stainless.

He told me he had a lot of trouble welding the bracket that had cracked and fallen of the muffler. He said as old as is is it could have a different metal composition or that it has absorbed contaminates over time. Patching a hole in the mid pipe was not as bad.

It was money well spent to patch the hole and have a hanger bracket on the muffler. He charged me $30, which I thought was more than fair considering I don't have the equipment to weld stainless.




I doubt it will last another 60 years though.

Also a new post and foot were installed.

Still have some clean up grinding/sanding and a few touch up welds to do. Seam seal everything and then prime.

Don't know about becoming a tin knocker. Thankfully I have seem to have good spacial abilities. Forming panels to support the footwell was interesting.

I did the standard blood letting, hoping no tetanus will be involved.

Welding thin metal is like drywall finishing, less is more.

I've welded many things over the years but never anything under an 1/8". Burning through is a pita.

I have a Lincoln 100 MIG with no gas and .35 flux core. Thin metal is challenging imo.
