Series Rover transport

Hi gang,

looking for advise and/or recommendations on a transport service to move Les across the country.

As Mrs. irishrgr and I approach retirement, we're moving to Northern Virginia to escape the grinding heat of Central Texas. Planning ahead, we'll need to have Les shipped up there using a transport service of some sort. Our household goods will travel via PODS, and we'll convoy in our other tow cars, neither of which will tow the Rover (smaller Honda's). Shipping the other two and taking a Rover road trip was vetoed in case anyone asks :-)

Has anyone here had any experience with car transport companies? Is covered vs. non covered worth the expense. It'll likely be the January timeframe when we do this once Uncle Sam has finished all his paperwork.

A friend shipped his 88 to and from my house round trip for me to wrench on it. Western PA to eastern MA. Open trailer. It was a small owner/operator kind of thing, but he was tapped into a network of car haulers. I will reach out to my friend and ask for this network's info. I'll post it asap.

I shipped my 88” from Texas to NY on an open carrier. I’ve shipped two other rovers and have never used an enclosed transport.

I’ve always hired a shipping broker who provides an estimate then reaches out to professional transporters. I haven’t had a bad experience or had any damage to any of the three. Once it showed up on a trailer towed behind a pickup truck when it was supposed to be flat-bedded but that was during Covid and I was kind of pushing the broker to get it done. Athena Hall is the name of the broker I would recommend. She’s been hired by a number of the defender guys. That’s where I found out about her.

The network my friend used is Coast to Coast Logistics. I'm sure they are online.

Best of luck with the move! Actually, moving always starts with packing, and throwing away stuff. That's the hard work.

Hey IrishRGR...why is it when that when I'm down in Austin visiting the in-laws, I can never find any Series vehicles?! You should enjoy NoVa, its only half as hot as Texas and there is a decent Rover community.

I too have used Athena a couple times and she is great. I have never had any issue with the drivers she contracted for me.

Thanks gang, I'll file these away. Move won't be until later in the year and I'm trying to get ahead of things. I did do a initial culling of rover bits, amazing how many rust encrusted screws, bolts and odds & ends have accumulated in the garage. Very much the "Hmmm, might need that again" sort of thing.

Yes, we're looking forward to the move despite the arse pain of a cross country move. Nova will be a nice change in pace, especially in retirement. I fully expect to get some good Rovering and camping in up there.

I've got a guy here in SC that does hotshot vehicle deliveries. He is a touch more expensive but he is one guy with a one car trailer. So you are getting that premium transport situation. PM me for his contact. You just call/text him when you are ready and he figures it out. Flat mileage rate out of Greenwood, SC.

He brought my D5 last year down from Pittsburgh.

Thanks team, I'll add these to the list. We're not moving until much later in the year, so good info. Any comments on how are these various guys bonded/insured in case they drop my Rover or have an accident?

Hi, I have used Kevin G. at All Coast Auto Transport for years. He brokered a cross country (Washington to NY) Rover delivery for me as well as some regional ones. And he has brokered moves for some other people I know that have all been very happy. He is extremely good, reasonably priced, and goes above and beyond when it coms to customer service.
