Seriestrek still around? Are there any other options out there?

  • #2
They folded/quit making the axles just a few months prior to me having the money to buy a set. They were beaucoup bucks though...
Supposedly Overland Engineering took over building them, but I believe this to be BS as they have never contacted me back after repeated attempts.

As far as I know, this is the only (bolt on) option currently available that will allow upgrading while maintaining Rover parts (and a Series axle tube). And it is more expensive than the SeriesTrek axles were. But since it is CV, it could be a good option for a full time 4 (LT230) converted Series Rover.
Series Land Rover CV Front Axle Conversion Kit (designdevelopmenteng.co.uk)

I'm half tempted to have some made up with 24 spline inners and outers to be able to run the 24 spline centers up front (which is critical anyway) to increase the axle strength. I had been hoping Ashcroft would offer them (since they offer the 24 spline high strength sets for the Series rear now). But no one knows.

It is not BS, Matt got all that from Jim when Jim got tired of dealing with endless tire kickers who never bought anything. Now if Matt is willing to sell them to you is another matter...

I just went through this. I spoke at length with Matt Browne and also with Dutchman. According to their records they haven’t made any Series front axles since 2011 and they only ever made them twice for Jim Young. You can call Dutchman and have them make you a set for over $1500 bucks. They still have the drawings. On top of that you’ll need some bushings turned up to go between the dutchman shafts and the halfshaft bearing races. Then if you break a u-joint shaft you have to go crawling back to Dutchman and beg them to make another one.
Or, you can go with the DDE setup and get the whole kit, or just the parts you need. In the end that’s what I did. The DDE kit requires the post-1980 hubs since their stub axles are the late style a la stage one. I have a Forbyn bros disc setup so I’m kind of committed to the early style hubs.
I called Greg Forbyn about getting a set of hubs made and he offered to make a set of stub axles instead.
So I now have new 300m inner axles, new swivel balls, pins, and railcos, and new early stub axles modified to work with AEU2522 cv joints that I already have. The only thing I can’t readily replace would be the inner shaft, but those are easy to get made compared to the u-joint setup.
I’m in it for slightly more than the u joint axles alone but I also will have all new swivel balls and lots of other new parts.
I highly recommend this approach over the u joint stuff. I believe it is stronger too. Greg says he is planning to offer inner shafts and stub axles to make this happen for other folks. Give them a call or email.

            All very interesting...

Spoke to Dutchman.. they have drawings, would need 10 orders to make $$ reasonable...
I'm trying a friend of mine to see if anything can be done..

thank you for the design development link.. I think that solved my rear end search..
shafts and flanges are readily available for a 24 spline diff..

Too bad Rover abandoned that route with axles.

Does Great Basin Rovers do axle stuff for Series trucks? I haven't gone down the axle upgrade hole yet, but I do remember Teri Ann mentioning GBR on her site.

the neat thing about those ENV axles is that they are essentially the same as an Eaton HO52 or HO72 axle which were used in American trucks. If you get the right one they are thrust bolted. Like diff pegging except from the factory. And the diff pinion has a bearing BEHIND where it meshes with the ring gear. AND…You can fit a detroit locker from a 14 bolt axle which gives you 35 spline setup. Cut/weld the axle tubes to your choice of length, get some shafts made up, and then you just have to figure out a spindle that can pass a 35 spline axle…I know it sounds like a lot but man do I have a ton of $$$ in beefing up my Rover axle. If I ever build another LR it will have something other than standard rover or salisbury centers.

Not sure if he offers rears but we talked a while back about fronts and it sounded like something he wanted to do but it was pretty far down the priority list.

I got the sense from the website that GBR had moved on from developing new stuff for Series and now focus on Defenders and Discos. I could be wrong, though. I spoke with GBR's head honcho a few years ago, and he seems like a good guy to work with.

Bill at GBR does 24 spline series rear axles. Have installed quite a few sets for people. Includes heavy duty drive flanges, which differ a bit in appearance from stock drive flanges. The dust cover screws on instead of the cap being pounded on like we're used to. Certainly a more robust design, but is aesthetically different

Ooh. That is good to know, drive flanges is one component I haven’t sorted yet. Thanks for the info!
