  • Quest for Heat

After doing the double stuffed heater core with a small improvement in heat output I decided to follow Nate's lead again and look for a higher volume blower. The folks at my local NAPA are really great about working with you to find a solution to an oddball problem. They found me a $25 blower motor and fan that fits a '72 Impala (and several other mid-70s GM products) that is very close in physical size to the original Smiths. The new fan is a bit larger in diameter than the original so I had to enlarge the hole. Other than a little drilling to mount the flange to the fan housing it was pretty straight forward. We just made a lunch run across town in a snow storm and 16° temps. It is much more comfortable than before. The air coming from the heater was warm, not hot. It's a good 6 miles each way but the engine never got warm enough to push the choke in fully. Time for a thermostat rated for a higher temperature.

    It's a shame "part # 542192 88c thermostat for the 2.25l" can't be found anywhere anymore.

That's a bit more cost effective than an unobtainium thermostat. I had a couple thermostats on the shelf. Of course, they're both 74°C. I have little doubt that's what is in my engine. Anyone running an 82°C thermostat year round?

I don't run t-stat in my RRC, just rad blockage in cold weather..

even on the hottest NC days, it never gets past 1/2 on the gauge,
with t-stat it would regularly go to 3/4 or higher if hot or towing.

83c or 88c? If he has 88c I think I will buy a spare, for a while they were ridiculous priced IF you found one.

Here is the link to the part from Napa if anyone needs it:

                          https://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p...039_0316891757

As I have the flat smiths in cab heater, I may not want to cut the panel? Need a better solution once I get the wiring figured out though.

Sean - Paul D originally posted that he bought a motor and fan. The part number you referenced appears to just be the fan motor.

I assume that you need the fan cage as well as the motor to realize the full benefits and higher air volume.

Do we have the fan cage part #?

I found a three position, 20 amp rated rotary switch and a four part coil resistor. If the switch fits where the original toggle switch is now and I can find a good place to mount the resistor I may convert the blower to a three speed.

The fan was $14. I'm sure the larger diameter contributes to the output. These are the part numbers:
