      Gene, the shims do fit in the recess in the case. They are a snug fit, which makes me think there might be some slight bending of the shim, creating the interference. It was behaving like the shim/thrust washer stack was sliding and ramping up on the bottom, making it impossible to slide the gear all the way down.

      I'll have to put this on the "doesn't matter now" list. I think it's time to close up the case and run it for another 49 years.
